Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient Course: Wednesday 14th – Friday 16th October 2015

Please note Foundation Trainees (F1 & F2) are no longer accepted on the CCrISP Course and are recommended to attend the START Surgery course. If a trainee at Foundation level (1 or 2) attends the CCrISP course, he or she will be removed from the course without compensation
This Royal College of Surgeons approved two and a half day course is designed to advance the practical, theoretical and personal skills necessary for the care of critically ill surgical patients.
Course Objectives
- Develop the theoretical basis and practical skills necessary to manage the critically ill surgical patient
- Be able to assess critically ill patients accurately and appreciate the value of a system of assessment for the critically ill
- Understand the subtlety and variety of presentation of critical illness and the methods available for improving detection
- Understand the importance of a plan of action in order to achieve clinical progress, accurate diagnosis and early definitive treatment, and be able to formulate a plan of action and involve appropriate assistance in a timely manner
- Appreciate that complications tend to occur in a cascade and realise that prevention of complications is fundamental to successful outcome
- Be aware of the support facilities available and interact with nursing staff, other surgeons, intensivists and anaesthetists, being aware in particular of the surgeon’s role in the delivery of multi-disciplinary care to the critically ill
- Understand the requirements of the patients and their relatives during critical illness and be able to inform and support both appropriately
Format
Limited to 16 places, the above is delivered through a series of lectures, practical workshops and simulated procedures
Target Audience
CT1 – ST3
Candidates receive the greatest benefit when CCrISP is taken in CT2/ST2 but candidates in the earlier part of specialist training – CT1/ST1 – may also apply. However, it is strongly recommended that they have had six months general surgery training, not including foundation training
Candidates at ST3 level and above, who have not successfully completed the CCrISP course before, may also apply
All participants on the course:
- Must know the basics of ECGs – best source “ECGs Made Easy” by HAMPTON
- Should ideally have completed a BSS course
- Should ideally have completed an ATLS course although this is not a prerequisite
This is an assessed course in which candidates will be allocated a mentor who will provide personal feedback
Certificates will only be awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons upon successful completion of the entire course and completion of their on-line evaluation within two weeks of the course

Cancellation of course 30 days prior to commencement date, course fees will be returned minus £50.00 administration fee. If you receive any course materials these must be returned prior to any refund
Cancellation within 30 days will result in a loss of fees.
If there is another course available, you may be able to transfer but a £50.00 administration fee will be charged to your card
