Revalidation of Trainees
The aims for trainees are the same as for Consultants - to support doctors in their professional development, in order to improve quality, patient safety and public confidence in the profession. The timescale is the same, they have to revalidate every 5 years from full registration i.e the start of Foundation Year 2. In addition they will automatically have to revalidate when they obtain their CCT. For trainees that enter a 7 year run through programme after completion of Foundation (the commonest situation), this means they will revalidate at the end of Year 4 of their run through programme and again 3 years later when they obtain their CCT.
The Process
The process is managed through the ARCP process and the information required is the same as for consultants e.g. information about clinical incidents, complaints and compliments, disciplinary procedures etc. We have always supported trainees involved in these adverse events, but the process for formally recording all involvement has become more robust.
The following have to be reported:
- Complaints -any complaint that a trainee has been named in, and the nature of the complaint. Complaints that involve a team of junior doctors may also lead to a complaint report if the investigation process reveals significant findings. According to the deanery classification, level 1 and 2 complaints need to be notified
- Clinical Incidents - level 2 and 3 clinical incidents. This means any involvement even it is a peripheral involvement as a witness
- Disciplinary issues - any proven conduct issue that occurs after a formal disciplinary investigation
The system is based on exception reporting of events to the Trust and the Deanery as they occur and the compilation of Collective Exit reports for the Trust. The Trust process is described more fully in the document "Revalidation for Trainees in LTHT" and there is a flowchart designed to describe this in more easily understood way.
Contact
All forms should be returned to traineerevalidation@leedsth.nhs.uk. Please email the same address with any queries about the process.
Early discussion about any individual or set of circumstances is encouraged and should be sought from the DPGME via the normal route i.e personal contact via phone/personal email. The revalidation process is not a substitute for this, but mandates it. It should be remembered that this is part of a supportive process and the trainees should have each of these events discussed with them. Please see the pages on Doctors in Difficulty for more information
