Pre-Hospital Emergency Department Resuscitative Thoracotomy (PERT)

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Be able to manage the arrested patient; working with the trauma team pre- thoracotomy and during resuscitative thoracotomy.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy specific to resuscitative thoracotomy including cardiac anatomy and the anatomy of the Hilum and chest wall.
• Carry out treatment of injuries to the Heart, including opening the pericardium, control of bleeding, and internal massage.
• Understand the management of the post-operative patient including internal defibrillation, drainage and closing the chest.

Target Audience: CT2-ST8, Consultants, SAS grades and professionals in emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care.

• Basic Surgical Skills and practical work on porcine models in small groups.
