Urine cytology cases will be booked in to trainees.
Senior trainees will have a period of assessment, whereby they will report a minimum of 10 cases supervised by Dr Chilka (the actual number of supervised cases is flexible, and may depend on the individual trainee).
For supervised cases, the trainee will ensure a report is typed and ready to be authorised prior to checking. These cases will be checked by Dr Chilka, and if in agreement, will be authorised with his name in addition to the trainee’s on the final reports.
The cytology numbers and diagnoses of these supervised cases will be entered on the trainee’s assessment list. After checking, Dr Chilka will sign and date the case on the list.
Any changes made by Dr Chilka to the report will be noted on the trainee’s assessment list.
If there are any cases which require major alterations (ie which would affect management), or 3 or more minor alterations, more supervised training will be required before repeating this exercise.
Once 10 supervised cases have been signed for (without alterations as described above), the trainee will be able to independently report negative cytology cases.
The list of 10 supervised cases, once signed and dated by Dr Chilka, should be filed in the trainee’s log book and a copy of this list given to JIW for the departmental records.
For independently reported cases, only the trainee’s name will be on the report. The phrase “Case reported independently by Specialist Registrar according to Department Protocol” should be included in the report (a quick text code is available).
Trainees will however continue to have urine cytology cases that are positive or suspicious for malignancy checked by Dr Chilka and his name will be on these reports in addition to the trainee’s.
Pre-part one trainees will continue to have all urine cytology cases checked by Dr Chilka
