Cardiothoracic Pathology Attachment

Members of team:

Drs Richard Bishop, Les Davidson, Radhika Ramnath (& Will Merchantfor cover)

Objectives

A- Set your targets

NB Before starting

  1. - get clear about what you already feel confident about in cardiothoracic pathology
  2. - get clear about what you know….. and then
  3. - note what in particular you want out of your attachment
    • If you discuss this at the start of your attachment with each of the consultants you work with we are better equipped to assist you in meeting your educational needs.

B - by end of attachment:

In each attachment, the trainee will aim to have dealt completely (including knowing how to orientate and cut up the specimens and including NYCRIS form summaries (minimum data sets) at the end of reports where appropriate) with at least two separate specimens from each of the following;

A.  Pneumonectomy/Lobectomy.

B.  Wedge excision of lung for tumour.

C. Wedge excision of lung for interstitial disease

D. Transbronchial biopsies

E. Endobronchial biopsies

F. Reactive pleural biosies

G. Malignant pleural bipsies with immunohistochemistry

(Trainee assessment can include reports from senior Biomedical Scientists as to the quality of blocks taken with regard to size, fixation etc.

Trainees are expected to assist the Group in specimen reception, inking margins, fresh slicing, taking research samples etc. )

NB All biopsies including bronchial endoscopic biopsies come to the consultants pigeon holes; the  trainee is expected to take these (fill in green slip from pigeon hole at far right) and to report all of the cases coming through while they are on the team. Due to clinical needs these small biopsies require rapid reporting turnaround so should be checked the same day as receiving them.

ROTA  - Please let Richard Bishop know in advance of any leave that will impact on the rota, thanks
