ARCPs

Trainees commencing year 1 after 1st August 2007 are on the ARCP system.  All these trainees (year 1 & 2) are currently based in Leeds, except one in Bradford.  The system for ARCPs differs from that of RITAs; it is a review of evidence by a panel of at least 3 members (from Gold Guide section 7.56.  Includes PGD/deputy, or a TPD, Chair of STC, TPD, RCPath rep, educational supervisors, rep from an employing authority, academic rep (for academic trainees).  External scrutiny of decisions from two sources: trained lay member and external trainer - must review at least 10% outcomes, and any recommendations from the panel about concerns over progress and evidence).

The trainee is responsible for submitting the evidence required in portfolios and from educational supervisors’ report; if any evidence is missing, the trainee will get an ARCP outcome 5.

ARCP will need to be towards the end of the training year (June/July).  From the Gold Guide – the ARCP outcome should be followed by an annual planning meeting of trainee educational supervisor and/or TPD and trainee to review and plan the next part of the training.

Documents required for ARCP

Summer 2009  - there will be ARCP for year 1&2 and RITAs for some of the senior trainees.  The ARCP will be in Sheffield, done by committee with only some trainees needing to attend.  This is the first time we have done full ARCPs, and the first time we have joined with Sheffield – being each other’s external assessor. The College are developing and piloting their forms. Below is a summary of what is needed.

For ARCP

What trainees have to do:

• Complete as much as you can of the Histopathology Educational Supervisor’s Structured Report (appendix 1) with activities since last ARCP/ start of training.
• Fill in summary of Training Attachments and Experience Gained (appendix 2)
• Meet with educational supervisor to review portfolio, and these two documents, in good time before the ARCP on 16th June.

What educational supervisors have to do:

• Receive composite trainers assessment form A = current generic competencies forms (appendix 3) from placements since last ARCP/ start of training.
• Where possible, attend educational supervisors meeting where these are discussed (20th May).
• Meet with trainee to receive draft of Educational Supervisors Structured Report, and discuss/ feedback information on generic competencies, MSF (year 1) and portfolio review.
• Complete Educational Supervisors Structured Report, specifically boxes 5 (gaps in training), 6 (statement review in totality of work place based assessment) and 9 (other comments/ issues). Educational supervisor and trainee sign off.
• Also complete Composite Trainers Assessment part B comment form (appendix 4) based on generic competencies feedback from other consultants and portfolio data. This should include a statement that supports readiness of trainee to progress to the next stage of training or identifies gaps in training/ competence that affects outcome of ARCP.

Date of ARCP = 16/06/09.

Organisational arrangements:

• Trainees who will get outcome other than ARCP 1 (equivalent to previous RITA C) will need to be present.
• Deanery staff will need to assemble ARCP committee and Deanery files for trainees.
• Liaise with Sheffield Deanery staff and KS over time table etc.
