Initial Welcome :
The Trainee should meet with (preferably ALL) the Consultants on the first day of their attachment, or alternatively the Consultant who is timetabled on for diagnostic work that week (see below).
At this meeting, the following will be discussed, distributed or completed;
Weekly timetable
Generally :
The Consultants in the team cover the workload on a weekly basis ie. a Consultant will be ‘on’ for a whole week for supervision of large specimen cut-ups, all reporting of core biopsies, Her2 reporting (Professor Hanby, Dr Shaaban) and MDT presentation.
NB. If a large case is cut-up during a Consultant’s week ‘on’ then that case is checked with that same Consultant whenever it is received, be that the following week.
Dr Lane & Dr Cullen cover breast cytology 2 days each per week, and Dr Bishop 1 day per week.
Cutup :
Generally, there is a cut-up every day. Depending on the number of Trainees attached to the Breast group each week, this is usually covered by the Trainees, with supervision for the junior trainees by senior Trainees or Consultants. Time of cut-up has to arranged daily on an individual basis with cut-up.
Reporting :
Slides from cut-ups will be distributed to the trainee from the Consultant for reporting.
After the initial review meeting, the Trainee will be able to see the core biopsies first. It will be agreed that, either the cases are given directly by the Consultant to the Trainee, or the Trainee ‘keeps an eye out’ for core biopsy cases in the Consultant’s pigeonhole, and writes a report on the back of the request form. The cases are then IMMEDIATELY returned to the Consultant or their pigeonhole. Feedback for these reports will be given as soon as possible but maybe after the case has been authorised. This system can only work if there are NO delays in the reporting of the core biopsy cases.
Additionally, there are several core biopsy teaching sets for Trainees to work through, and any problem cases can be discussed with the Consultants.
MDTs:
| Tuesdays | 9am | Diagnostic Meeting, then main Therapeutic MDTM (Radiology Education Suite, LGI) |
| Mondays | 4pm | Breast Screening (BSU, Seacroft) |
| Thursdays | 12:30pm | Diagnostic meeting (Radiology Education Suite, LGI) |
Multiheader teaching sessions/jounal clubs:
None routinely scheduled at present
End of attachment Review
During the last week of the attachment, the Trainee will meet with the Consultants again.
The completed Log Book should be brought along to this meeting, and together with the initial Training Plan, an assessment of the attainment of the initial aims/objectives will be performed. An opinion on the Trainee’s progress will be given, and guidance for future attachments and training. A Trainee Attachment Record will be completed as appropriate for ST1/ST2-5.
