Leeds Teaching Hospitals newborn care is spread across the St. James’ (SJUH) and General Infirmary (LGI) sites. Both sites offer all levels of newborn care with different specialties being offered at each site; the Infirmary have surgery, neurology and cardiology services whilst St. James’ look after nephrology and hepatology in conjunction with the specialist teams. There are about 8500 deliveries/year in Leeds with marginally more at the LGI as the table below shows.

There are well over 100 nurses that work in our units, some of whom rotate between sites and some of whom are based on a single site. They are led by our Matron, Yvette Bartlett with a Lead Nurse on each site; Sally Kemp (LGI) and Jackie Riley (SJUH). There is a team of Senior Sisters who form the Outreach Team looking after our babies after discharge in the community and a number of neonatal nurse practitioners.

The nursing staff has an invaluable wealth of experience in care of the newborn and you have the opportunity to learn a lot from them. It is wise to listen to them when they offer advice!

Doctors who participate on the neonatal rota will be given the newborn service handbooks at the beginning of their term. These are available to others should they require them.  However, a few highlights are brought to everyone’s attention here to cover emergency situations.
