New Training Equipment for LISTA

Funded from the SHA and the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery LISTA (Leeds Institute for Skills Training and Assessment) has some new simulation equipment

  • Simbionix LAP Simulator
  • Simbionix GI /Bronch Simulator
  • Laerdal 3G SimMan
  • Pharmabotics Ultrasound CVC and Nerve Block Simulator

LISTA (formally LIMIT) is part of Medical Education Leeds specialises in clinical skills and patient safety training for multi-professional teams at undergraduate and post qualification levels. Work has started to implement and link the use of these simulators to curriculum and training requirements with the Trust.

The LAP Mentor multidisciplinary simulator that provides hands on practice of complete laparoscopic procedures as well as basic laparoscopic skills. The system is aimed at enhancing operational and medical decision making and improving laparoscopic skills. The simulator utilizes surgical instrumentation which enables practice on virtual laparoscopic tools that respond as in real life (with haptic sensations). It also offers a laparoscopic camera with a choice of 30º or 0º view.

The GI/ Bronch Mentor is an interactive computerised simulator, designed to provide medical experts with hands on training for endoscopic procedures. Using a specially designed mannequin and a computer simulation program, the system provides trainees with a unique opportunity to learn and practice required techniques.

The GI/ Bronch Mentor enables instructors to design tailor made tutorials for trainees, according to their requirements and backgrounds.

SimMan 3G comes with a long list of advanced features, to ensure that the end user have the opportunity to run a wide range of scenarios and patient cases. The manikin can 'talk' to the team, blink, breathe, and respond appropriately to a wide range of drugs and fluids administered intravenously via a specially designed 'bar-code' reader. Scenarios can be recorded for subsequent feedback to the team.

The CVC and nerve block simulators are both able to be used with ultrasound

  • Can practise safely needle insertion of Introducer, Guidewire (Seldinger
  • technique), Dilator and Central line into intimal jugular vein or subclavian vein and supra clavicular approach
  • Trainees can identify IJV and SV blood Measles with ultrasound probe and practise correct needle insertion
  • Full central line insertion can be undertaken
  • Use of ultrasound probe: depth, gains and approach
  • Practice hand-eye coordination with probe and needle position
