Electronic Journals
NHS Staff in Leeds have 24-hour access to over 8000 electronic full-text journals, which can be used at work, home or from anywhere with internet access. These include:
- Journals purchased centrally for all NHS staff in England and Wales
- Journals purchases regionally by NHS Yorkshire & the Humber
- Journals purchased cooperatively for the three Trusts in Leeds
- Journals purchased by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for its staff only
- Journals which are freely available on open access eg www.freemedicaljournals.com
A full list of all the titles is produced nationally by NHS Evidence and is given under the “My Journals” link on www.library.nhs.uk. You will need to be logged in with your NHS Athens account In order to see regional and local journals.
To get into the e-journals, go to www.library.nhs.uk and login. Once you are logged in, scroll down to “Books, journals and healthcare databases” and click on the “My Journals” link. The system will recognise that you are part of this Trust and open up this Trust’s set of journals.
You can then get at journals in two ways:
- Use the search box to search for the title or keywords from it
- Use the A-Z listing to find the title
Please note: some publishers specify an embargo period during which time it is not possible to access the most recent issues of their journals eg 12 month embargo. If a journal is embargoed in this way, it will be clearly shown in My Journals. This does not apply to titles where the Trust has a current subscription.
Access to Trust subscription e-journals
As well as being listed in My Journals, all Trust electronic journals are included in the Trust library catalogue. These can be searched by title or by subject with “Electronic resource” selected from the “Library” menu.
There is a detailed guide to finding and using e-journals and e-books at http://www.libraries.leeds.nhs.uk/Downloads/Library/guideejournals.pdf , and the library service runs regular training sessions on these resources.
