Elderly Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Medicine of the Elderly. We hope that your stay with us will prove to be both interesting and enjoyable.  Most of our junior staff achieve a high degree of job satisfaction and come to appreciate the unique challenge that medicine for the elderly presents.

Many elderly people do not usually relish change and they may be easily disorientated by abrupt removal from their home.  Even more than young patients, they need to feel secure if admitted to hospital and all those who care for them are responsible for this.  Their modesty, dignity and self-respect are no less important than when they were young.

Patterns of care for the elderly vary from place to place.  In our Unit we aim for an increasingly comprehensive acute service for the elderly followed by a team approach to rehabilitation and carefully planned discharges and follow up.  We have excellent links with community services for elderly people. There are now many other units across the country with policies similar to ours. Our aim is to relieve our patients' symptoms and improve their quality of life in whatever environment suits them best.  Curing their disease may not always be possible, but our attitude should still be one of problem-solving on their behalf.  To this end we aim for quick and accurate diagnosis, sensible investigation and appropriate treatment. Whatever your chosen specialty, most of you will spend a lot of your future career dealing with elderly patients, and we hope that your experience here will prepare you well for the task ahead.
