The Leeds Seldinger Chest Drain Insertion Course

Synopsis

The Course

This half-day course is designed to teach the theoretical and practical skills necessary for the safe insertion of seldinger type chest drains. It also covers the management of common pleural diseases. The course is aimed at all junior doctors who may be required to insert chest drains.

The course includes a lecture and video demonstration of correct drain insertion before candidates are allowed to practice the complete procedure including full asepsis, drain insertion and drain fixation. The emphasis of the course is placed around the small group practical sessions in which animal models are used to accurately represent human tissue.

Candidates are supplied with all relevant pre-course material and will receive personal feedback during the course. There will be a short MCQ assessment based on the pre-course reading material and the course lecture. These will relate to issues regarding indications for and technical aspects of drain insertion.

Successful candidates will be issued with a certificate confirming attendance and completion of the theory and practical aspects of the course. In addition there will be a specific DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skill) form completed relating to drain insertion into an animal model under full asepsis.
